NexGen’s market value is roughly C$10 billion, versus Rook I’s modeled after-tax value of C$6.32 billion at US$95 uranium and C$6.79 billion at US$100. The supplied financial history shows no operating revenue and negative operating cash flow every year from 2020 through 2025. Operating cash use reached C$47.5 million in 2025, while that year’s net loss was C$309.7 million. The first half of 2026 still produced an C$81.5 million loss. Although the second quarter showed C$74.5 million of net income, a C$96.5 million non-cash gain from revaluing convertible debt was the main reason. Durable earnings therefore depend on completing Rook I and selling uranium profitably.

Business strengthPermits, liquidity, and low modeled mine costs reduce risk, but dilution has been substantial.

Rook I now has its construction licence, and June liquidity included C$756.2 million cash, C$214.1 million of short-term investments and C$341.2 million of uranium inventory. Current liabilities were C$675.4 million, including C$612.4 million of convertible debentures. However, shares outstanding climbed from 569.1 million at 2024 year-end to 660.0 million in 2025 and 670.5 million by August 2026. The 2025 equity raise alone issued about 78.9 million shares. Capital has strengthened the project, but existing owners have repeatedly shared future value with new investors.

What could change the storyCheaper funding, stronger uranium prices, or a larger discovery could justify more of today’s premium.

The bull case strengthens if construction stays near the C$2.2 billion estimate, financing is mostly debt, customer prepayments or project-level capital, and uranium remains at least around the long-term US$95 area. Patterson Corridor East could also add meaningful value, but it does not yet have a project valuation comparable with Rook I. The bear case is concrete: at US$80 uranium, Rook I’s modeled value falls to C$4.89 billion. Another cost increase or equity-heavy funding would also reduce value per existing share.

Licensed construction activities began June 8, 2026, followed by the public groundbreaking in August. Rook I is planned as a roughly four-year build with estimated pre-production capital of C$2.2 billion and potential production of up to 30 million pounds annually. Starting construction removes an important regulatory and execution hurdle, but it also turns estimated costs into real cash commitments. Shares fell about 1.5% on August 13; that timing alone does not show investors disliked the milestone.

Reuters reported on August 17 that NexGen was in regular discussions with BHP and planned to raise about $1 billion within nine months. Options included customer prepayments, debt financing and selling an equity interest in the project. No BHP transaction was announced, so partnership or takeover value remains speculative. NXE rose about 3.5% that trading day on unusually heavy volume, but several uranium-sector and market factors could have contributed; the price move cannot reliably be assigned to the talks alone.

PCE discovery expandsNew drilling extended a high-grade uranium zone, adding possible long-term value beyond the main mine.

On August 25, NexGen said the high-grade portion of Patterson Corridor East had expanded vertically by 17% to 644 metres. The company had completed about 20,139 metres of its planned 42,000-metre 2026 program and added a fifth drill. NXE gained about 2.6% that day, although attribution is uncertain. The discovery could eventually extend NexGen’s production life or support another development, but drilling intersections are not yet equivalent to an economic reserve or a proven project value.

Federal construction approvalCanada granted the final federal approval needed to build Rook I, removing the project’s largest permit hurdle.

On March 5, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission approved the environmental assessment and issued the licence allowing site preparation and construction. Provincial environmental approval and other required provincial authorizations were already in place. This changed Rook I from a permitted-in-waiting project into one able to enter full construction, materially improving the probability that its modeled uranium production can eventually become cash flow. It also shifted investor attention toward financing, construction costs and schedule execution rather than federal approval risk.
