American warns of further losses despite record revenue

American Airlines ($AAL) reported record third-quarter 2026 revenue of $16.3 billion, up 19.3%, but higher fuel costs pushed it into a loss. GAAP net loss was $269 million, or $0.41 per share, while the adjusted loss was $182 million, or $0.28 per share. Fuel expense increased $1.9 billion, or 67.5%, overwhelming gains in premium demand and passenger yields.

Management forecast an adjusted loss of $0.50–$1.10 per share for the fourth quarter of 2026 and $1.00–$1.60 for 2026. Its fourth-quarter 2026 fuel assumption of $4.70 a gallon implies approximately $2.8 billion of additional expense against the comparable period. American plans slower capacity growth in 2027 and reported $11.8 billion of available liquidity. The outlook remains highly sensitive to fuel prices and the airline’s ability to recover costs through fares.
