Akebia doses the first patient in a rare-kidney-disease trial

Akebia ($AKBA) Therapeutics dosed the first patient in its Phase 2 basket trial of ebribafusp, an experimental treatment for rare complement-mediated kidney diseases. The study covers IgA nephropathy, lupus nephritis and C3 glomerulopathy. Initial data are expected in 2027, making this a clinical-development milestone rather than an efficacy readout.

Ebribafusp combines a targeting antibody with factor H and is designed to inhibit complement activity at affected tissues. That proposed mechanism still needs to be evaluated in patients. The open-label trial uses weekly subcutaneous dosing over an initial 26-week treatment period, with an extension for eligible responders. Without randomized comparative results, the announcement does not establish clinical benefit, superiority to existing treatments or a basis for regulatory approval.
