Atomera and IQE agree development program for gallium nitride on silicon

Atomera ($ATOM) signed a joint development agreement with IQE ($IQE) to advance radio-frequency gallium nitride devices made on silicon. The program combines Atomera's Mears Silicon Technology with IQE's epitaxial manufacturing capabilities, aiming to improve device performance while using silicon's potential cost and scale advantages.

The companies plan multiple development cycles and customer sampling for foundries, integrated device manufacturers and chip designers. IQE would manufacture the wafers, with the collaboration initially focused on radio-frequency applications and potential later expansion into power electronics. The work could help address technical barriers to wider GaN-on-silicon adoption, but the announcement does not establish volume production, a guaranteed customer order or financial consideration. Commercial benefits depend on development results, qualification and eventual customer uptake.
