Barclays lifts quarterly profit and plans a further £500 million buyback
Barclays ($BARC) reported third-quarter 2026 pretax profit of £2.32 billion, 12% above the comparable period, as income increased 3% to £7.37 billion. Earnings per share rose 18% to 12.3 pence. The bank announced its intention to repurchase up to £500 million of shares, taking distributions announced during the year to £2.8 billion.
Performance varied across the investment bank: equities income increased 47%, while fixed-income, currencies and commodities income fell 19%. Barclays booked £201 million of structural cost actions in the quarter and expects about £300 million more in the final quarter as it changes operations and staffing. Its common equity tier-one capital ratio was 14.2%, and management said the group remained on track for its 2026 and 2028 targets. The additional buyback is planned rather than completed.
