Caterpillar plans $1 billion expansion of compact-equipment manufacturing
Caterpillar ($CAT) intends to invest approximately $1 billion in North Carolina to increase manufacturing capacity for its compact-equipment business. The plan includes a new Sanford facility for compact track loaders and telehandlers, products used in construction, landscaping, agriculture and materials handling. The company says the investment responds to growing demand from small contractors and expanding businesses.
The proposed facility would use automation, digital production systems and integrated logistics to improve manufacturing performance. It represents a substantial capital commitment to production capacity, rather than a customer order or an immediately operating plant. Caterpillar did not provide a completion timetable, quantified capacity increase or earnings contribution in the announcement. Its financial return will depend on construction execution and demand when the capacity becomes available.
