Cabot redirects $50 million grant toward expanded US battery-materials plants
Cabot ($CBT) revised its North American battery-materials expansion plan around existing facilities in Louisiana and Texas. A modified $50 million US Department of Energy grant will support the program alongside $75 million of company investment. The plan shifts the grant-supported work from a previously proposed Michigan project to brownfield expansion at Cabot’s Franklin and Pampa sites.
Franklin will expand conductive-carbon production, while Pampa will add carbon-nanostructure capacity for battery applications. Operations are targeted by the end of 2028. Using existing sites changes the location and implementation of the investment, but it does not create an additional $50 million grant on top of the original award. The announced spending supports future manufacturing capacity; commercial volumes and the eventual contribution to earnings remain dependent on completing the projects and securing demand.
