IBM’s Anderon finalizes $1 billion US quantum-foundry award

Anderon, an IBM ($IBM) company, finalized an agreement with the US Department of Commerce for a $1 billion CHIPS research-and-development award. The funding supports a US-based quantum foundry using 300-millimeter wafers in Albany, New York. It advances a previously announced letter of intent into a finalized award agreement.

IBM is separately committing an additional $1 billion to the initiative. Initial wafers are already running, while the program is intended to strengthen fabrication capabilities and the supply chain needed for future quantum systems. The combined funding should not be described as $2 billion of government aid or commercial revenue. The announcement establishes financial and manufacturing progress, not proof that a fault-tolerant quantum computer or a commercially superior quantum application has been delivered.
