Kropz restructures Elandsfontein and plans no further phosphate-rock production
Kropz announced an urgent review and restructuring of Elandsfontein on 7 September 2026.
Operating change
The company says lower realised phosphate-rock prices, higher fuel, chemical and freight costs, and a difficult production ramp-up have prevented operational profitability.
During the first five months of FY2027, the operation produced 150,246 tonnes and sold 149,907 tonnes of phosphate rock. No further Phosrock production is currently planned; near-term revenue will primarily come from existing inventory.
New focus
Management intends to develop the Nanophos market with a lower cost base. Volumes are expected to be below historical Phosrock levels, and commercial growth depends on customer development, seasonality and overcoming handling constraints.
The restructuring includes operational downsizing and consequences for employees. A future Phosrock restart requires improved market conditions and board approval.
What to watch
Inventory liquidation can generate receipts temporarily, but is different from a sustainable production business. The main financial questions are restructuring costs, cash runway and whether Nanophos can build profitable recurring demand.
