Medtronic’s GI Genius system shows gains in large clinical-practice study
Cosmo reported new results for GI Genius, the AI-assisted endoscopy system it develops and Medtronic ($MDT) commercializes. The cluster-randomized quality-improvement study covered more than 334,000 colonoscopies across 139 US Veterans Health Administration facilities. Availability of the system was associated with 22% higher adjusted odds of detecting an adenoma.
At facilities with access to the technology, the adenoma detection rate increased from 50.7% to 54.9%. The odds measure is not a 22-percentage-point rise in detection or evidence of an equivalent reduction in cancer mortality. The study evaluated an earlier software generation, rather than the latest version. The release disclosed no new Medtronic contract value and noted that the Veterans Affairs department does not endorse one vendor over another.
