Meta loses UK challenge to online safety information demands

Britain’s High Court rejected a challenge by Meta ($META), TikTok and X to information notices issued by Ofcom. Reuters reported that the notices sought detailed measures of content moderation, including removed or restricted posts and users’ exposure to harmful material. The companies had argued that the demands imposed excessive regulatory burdens.

The decision leaves Meta facing the reporting requirements under the UK’s online safety regime. Ofcom’s published framework requires platforms to assess illegal-content risks and protect children, with serious violations potentially attracting penalties of up to £18 million or 10% of qualifying worldwide revenue, whichever is greater. The Reuters report did not identify a fine. The operational implication is a continuing compliance workload, with its earnings effect still unquantified.
