MaxLinear introduces Puma 9 chip platform for lower-cost broadband upgrades

MaxLinear ($MXL) has introduced Puma 9, an 8-nanometre system-on-chip platform supporting DOCSIS 3.1, 3.1+ and 4.0 cable-broadband services. It is available to operators and equipment partners developing gateways. Features include DDR5-memory compatibility, edge-AI processing, a foundation for Wi-Fi 8 and post-quantum-security readiness. In-field software upgrades are intended to let operators improve services without repeatedly replacing customer equipment.

The company says its integrated architecture can lower customer-premises-equipment costs by 30%–50% against alternative DOCSIS 4.0 solutions and support up to 12 Gbps downstream throughput. Those are vendor performance and cost claims, not independently established savings or new revenue guidance. Commercially, the platform could reduce a barrier to network upgrades and support future chip design wins; actual financial benefit will depend on customer qualification, adoption and shipment volumes.
