Volkswagen selects NXP chips for its next vehicle electronics architecture

Volkswagen ($VOW3) and NXP ($NXPI) agreed a strategic partnership that makes NXP’s S32K5 microcontrollers a common component of Volkswagen’s future zonal vehicle architecture. The first vehicle using the architecture is planned for 2027. The chips will coordinate functions within different vehicle zones, including lighting, comfort, chassis and safety systems, while connecting sensors and actuators with central computing resources.

The architecture is being developed by the Volkswagen–Rivian ($RIVN) technology joint venture and is intended to support multiple brands and vehicle segments. Consolidating functions into fewer control units could simplify hardware and development, while giving NXP a broader role in Volkswagen’s electronics supply chain. The announcement confirms a technology selection and partnership, but does not disclose an order value, guaranteed production volumes or revenue contribution.
