Oracle-linked TikTok faces hurdle in proposed privacy settlement
A US judge indicated he was inclined to reject a request to end part of TikTok's privacy oversight, according to Reuters. The proposed $400 million settlement includes $300 million payable immediately and another $100 million conditional on ending an existing consent decree. The indication was preliminary, not a final rejection of the entire settlement.
Oracle ($ORCL)'s connection is its existing 15% stake in the TikTok USDS joint venture and its role as the venture's security and cloud partner. That relationship is background, not a new transaction. The proposed payment concerns TikTok and ByteDance; it should not be presented as a $400 million fine against Oracle or a disclosed change to Oracle's earnings.
