Semtech moves 50G optical chipsets into volume production
Semtech ($SMTC) announced volume production of 50-gigabit optical fronthaul chipsets for 5G-Advanced networks. The products support links of up to 10 kilometres using duplex fiber and up to 15 kilometres in bidirectional wavelength-division configurations. The milestone concerns components intended to support higher-capacity mobile-network connections, rather than a completed rollout by every operator.
In a separate update, Semtech joined the XPO development group for high-density optical interconnects used in AI infrastructure. Its work includes 200-gigabit-per-second-per-lane components for architectures targeting 12.8-terabit modules. The two announcements are at different stages: the 50G products have reached volume production, while XPO participation concerns an emerging architecture and ecosystem. Neither release quantified new customer orders or changed the company’s financial outlook.
