Steel Dynamics expects higher earnings and record steel shipments

Steel Dynamics ($STLD) forecast third-quarter earnings of $5.34–5.38 per share, up from $3.69 in the preceding quarter and $2.74 a year earlier. Management expects record steel shipments and stronger steelmaking margins, reflecting higher selling prices alongside lower scrap costs. The outlook points to an improvement in the company’s largest operating business.

Conditions are more mixed elsewhere. Metals recycling is expected to generate lower earnings as spreads and shipments decline, while steel fabrication should improve modestly with greater volumes. The fabrication backlog is approximately 50% above its year-earlier level and extends into early 2027. The release provides management’s quarterly estimate, rather than audited earnings, and does not imply that every segment is benefiting equally.
