USA TODAY and Lee reorganize local-newspaper ownership

USA TODAY ($TDAY) and Lee Enterprises ($LEE) have announced agreements reshaping their local-newspaper portfolios. The arrangements end TNI Partners, the joint venture behind the Arizona Daily Star, with USA TODAY assuming full ownership and operations. Lee will acquire four publications in Montana and South Dakota: the Great Falls Tribune, Sioux Falls Argus Leader, Aberdeen American News and Watertown Public Opinion.

The companies described the agreements as effective immediately, concentrating publications in regions where each already has an operating presence. That realignment may allow resources and commercial functions to be organized more consistently within each group. However, neither company disclosed the transaction values, the earnings contributions of the transferred titles or quantified savings. The announcement supports a change in portfolio structure, not an assumption of a particular increase in profit.
