Volkswagen reportedly considers China-developed software for much of its European range
Volkswagen ($VOW3) is considering extending its China Electronic Architecture to European models, Reuters reported, citing Manager Magazin. The proposal could cover roughly three quarters of next-generation Volkswagen, Skoda and Cupra vehicles. It has not been approved publicly, and Volkswagen declined to comment. Any implications for Rivian ($RIVN) are indirect: the report does not announce the cancellation of their existing cooperation.
Volkswagen’s existing description of the architecture says it was developed by its Chinese technology operations, Cariad China and XPeng ($XPEV), and is designed for electric, hybrid and combustion-engine vehicles. It reduces the number of electronic control units by around 30% and supports remote updates. Those capabilities explain the platform’s scope, but they do not establish a decision to deploy it in Europe.
