Ginkgo joins a federally backed RNA-manufacturing project worth up to $17.5 million

Ginkgo Bioworks ($DNA) received a subcontract worth up to $17.5 million to participate in an ARPA-H program focused on RNA manufacturing. Waterfall Scientific is the prime contractor. The project, called ESCALATOR, is intended to combine continuous-flow RNA production with autonomous laboratory hardware, control software and quality-related processes for patient-scale manufacturing.

Ginkgo’s role centers on its laboratory-automation capabilities rather than developing a new therapeutic candidate of its own under this award. The work aims to reduce manual steps and make complex manufacturing processes more reproducible. The headline amount is the maximum subcontract value, not revenue already recognized or cash already collected. The announcement establishes funded development work within the broader government program; successful construction and validation of the proposed manufacturing system remain future deliverables.
