Europe’s Population 1880–2026
How has Europe’s population changed since 1880? Explore more than 140 years through a top-15 ranking and a historical map, from the German and Russian empires to Europe in 2026.
Press play, drag the timeline or choose a year to follow changing populations, borders and country identities. The chart and map share the same clock and population figures. Violet-to-peach shading shows where people are concentrated; historical flags follow the timeline. Use the country lookup to highlight smaller states. Open fullscreen for a closer look.
Watch empires break apart, countries reunite and new states emerge. During the world wars and the modelled Russian and Spanish civil wars, populations move between the powers controlling their territories. Which change surprised you most?
About the data
This interactive uses the same prepared population model as our video. It covers European countries, not only EU members. Transcontinental countries such as Russia and Turkey use whole-country totals, while the map focuses on Europe. Overseas colonial populations are not automatically added to European states. Kazakhstan and Armenia are excluded from this film’s scope.
Historical populations combine annual observations, estimates and documented backfills. The 2024–2026 figures are UN medium population projections. Wartime figures estimate populations under territorial control, rather than consistently measuring sovereign national populations. Faction totals divide the existing population instead of adding extra inhabitants.
Numbers and borders are interpolated for continuous animation. Intermediate frontiers, including the schematic Russian Civil War fronts, are reconstructions rather than exact daily military maps. The source atlas has annual snapshots and incomplete coverage of local conflicts; this is not a complete historical atlas or a record of every occupation and reversal.
Density shading comes from HYDE’s gridded population estimates through 2015. Later shading retains that spatial pattern; it is not observed local density in 2026. Small map labels without a number mean a population observation is unavailable.
